Cleaning the glass

i've got a tamron SP 2x teleconverter. it had haze that did not look like fungus. i dismantled it and i've got all the glass clean and clear except for one lens. this lens is still foggy after several tries at cleaning with alcohol and acetone. it seems like the glass itself is foggy. does anyone know what the problem is?

Have you tried using it Roy?
My guess is that it still takes decent pictures

I have had good results cleaning lenses with a simple window cleaning agent (one of these pump action bottles). Just try to find one with as few as possible add-on chemicals (colours, flavourings etc.) - a good bet is a "green" product. After that I usually rinse it in water and dry it an then it gets a final wipe down with Eclipse. So far this cleaning action removed anything from lenses, including fungus. If the fogging is not really in the glass, but on the outside, it should work.

Hey roy, I have had luck with methanol on a hazy vivitar then again if it is the cement between 2 elements that is hazy I don't know what to do then. good luck.

i've used denatured alchohol and eclipse. i think that's methanol.

To clean my lenses, I use bone or lamp black - absolutely dry - after brushing with a soft brush. I bought a small bottle years ago from a calligraphy store (pure, ultra fine carbon - used to make ink). I dab some on lens paper or pick some up with a que tip and work it softly in little circles. I only do this outside, as spilled pure carbon is a pain in the arse. This is actually the old time way to clean lenses.

Be sure that the "cloudiness" is not cloudy glue between a doublet group. If it is, I remedied it once years ago by boiling the doublet to melt the glue and separate the glass. Cleaned the glass thoroughly, and reglued with a dot of Canadian balsam - there's an art to this. I believe they now use "optical glues" though...

sorry for the delay but i forgot. this is a tip i got about this. i was also told that just about any product similar will work. also i can re polish the lens with cerium oxide but you have to make sure you polish the entire lens the same amount. the lemon pledge works ESPECIALLY on my eye glasses.

I have a suggestion you might consider. Try spraying the etched
glass with "Lemon Pledge" and very lightly polish it off. An oculist
many years ago recommended that to me in lieu of the various (usually
unsuccessful) resin coatings touted to fill tiny scratches and other
surface imperfections on eyeglasses. He said that he used it
routinely on fine optical surfaces. I have been using it on my
eyeglasses regularly for perhaps 20 years and on filters for the last
several years. If it doesn't fix the problem, it washes off with
soap and water or isopropyl alcohol and you haven't risked anything.

Although it sounds like a simple solution, I wonder how long it will last.

After all, the Pledge folks claim you have to use it every time you dust, so obviously it doesn't last forever
