Pentax SMC 8/1000mm?

Does anyone know anything about a Pentax SMC 8/1000mm lens? It’s not a mirrorlens so it’s a large beast. Is it any good? And how much is it worth?

I have no idea what it is like, but think you might need to invest in a larger camera bag and get down the gym to sharpen up those bicep muscles !!

And a new car.

And a porter.

And a bigger house with more storage facilities.

And a guard.

And on special holidays to make your new acquisition worthwile. Word has it that tropical rocky islands are best.

And a private charter airplane to get there.

Not to mention all the filters!!!

I did a quick look on the web, and although no pictures, I think this is a 6x7 lens

Not sure if there was a 67 version or not, but the link to Bojidar's page shows it as a K-mount.

Seems past the useful size/f-stop ratio to me. You'de have to be quite intentional and methodical in your use of it to accomodate its requirements. Not at all a general use item, thats for sure.

Thanks for the link to Bojidar, that's the lens I'm thinking about.
I figured it might look cool on the shelf, and perhaps it's even useful for the occasional shoot at the moon. Beside that I guess it's pretty useless...

Hogwash. Try it out on wildlife. Many a lens out there has their sweet spot at f/8 anyhow. Your lens starts at f/8, so always shoot it wide open. It is not a useless lens at all. You will need a good solid tripod though.

Gimbal.

It´s huge lens. I know, I´ve held one (probably the one you are aiming for here) and I´d say I would go for a 500/4.5 with a good 2X coverter instead if you want to carry the stuff around.

If you are a collector, well I really hope you´ll get it!

I have never tried this lens, but here's some data:

This lens comes from the 1958 Takumar F/8.0 1000mm, a 3 element 3 group long focus lens measuring 92cm and weighting 7.5kg. The newer telefocus design appeared in 1965 as the Tele-Takumar F/8.0 1000mm. In 1971, it was updated and became the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar f/8.0 1000mm. In 1975, it was adapted to the K-bayonet mount and became the SMC Pentax f/8.0 1000mm.

All versions of this lens were optically identical (5 elements in 5 groups). The different versions weighted 5.5kg and measured approximately 73cm. Due to the length of the lens, focusing was achieved with a rack-and-pinion mechanism instead of the helicoid commonly found on other lenses. No close focus at all: minimum focusing distance was 30m (98ft)! Diaphragm was fully manual (no preselection or automatic actuation) and the minimum aperture was f/45. The lens was equipped with an extending lens hood as well as a rotating tripod bush. Like on the 500/4.5 lens, the rear part of the lens was removable with a 3-claw bayonet, in order to make fitting the lens to the camera body easier. The rear part also contained the 49mm filter mount. The lens was sold with a wooden tripod (6.5kg) and an aluminium case (7.5kg). All these details are from Gerjan van Oosten, The Ultimate Asahi Pentax Screw Mount Guide, published by Uitgeverij Jansz, Zeist, The Netherlands, 1999 (ISBN 90-76537-02-X).

This lens is not really suitable for travel as the weight of the lens + its tripod + its dedicated case + a Pentax SLR body would exceed the luggage allowance on most airlines (20 kg)

Cheers!

Wow that lens looks stunning. 5 kgs is still pretty light for something that looks like a all metal and glass bazooka. Wildlife hikes would be interesting to say the least. What with all the cursing and ranting thats sure to echo from the trenches there might not be any wildlife around to shoot heh^^.

I wonder how much shipping to Idaho would be? Then I'd have to borrow the fork lift from work to get it into the house, lol. Whoa, I could strap it to the forks to raise and lower it!
Has anybody ever seen a picture taken with it?
