Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Sonnar 2.8/180 ?

Just visiting local gallery and the owner has some old gear laying around. He has the above mentioned lens and says he thinks it is a Pentax screw mount lens. I look at the giant heavy pice of class and think hmm. maybe. It is dirty and needs some work. Before I google it I figured I would ask here. Anyone know if A it will work with Pentax. B. worth $75 C. paper wieght give it back. Oh he let me take it home to play with no questions asked or cash given. Said if I want to keep sedn him a check. I will post shots of it in a bit.

Pictures and bad news.

Looks like it is pretty dirty and may have a small spot of fungus on the lens inside. It also appears to be stuck open at f2.8. Not such a bad thing really. So next question I guess I need an adapter of some sort to even try it. can some one point me to one?

It is a classic lens that it was made for the Olympics in Munich 1972 (if I am not wrong). All of them looks like a medium format lens adapted for M42-mount (so they are huge) and it is said to be very sharp even wide open. It usually goes well above 300USD in good condition and it is really difficult to find. The fungus and aperture problems explains the low price. I think that the 200 f2.8 follows the design of the 180mm and it can be found at the same price. As somebody said, their are sturdy and heavy like a tank (take into account that they dont have tripod mount). You can also found the 300 f4 but be aware that it is made for Pentacon cameras. About the adapter M42 to K-mount) you can find them easily in ebay althought most of them come from china. I would advice you to get the original Pentax adapter since it is easier to install/remove from the camera without any extra tool.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the info guys. This one does actually have the tripod mount/collar built right into it. I am still contimplating if I will keep it or not. I already have a Sigma 70-200 2.8 so it is not like the range is something I am lacking. I just am in awh af the size of the glass and the 180 may be a good thing for some sports things. I don't know I will give it a few days and see if I can't find a place that would repair it. I will keep you posted.

For 75 bux, there may be some nostolgic value in it, but other than that, junk it unless you want to get it cleaned.

I see, is the 200 2.8 the one that it doesnt have it. I wonder why didnt implement it if both were made at a similar time (actually I think that the 200 f2.8 was made after the 180).

I have the 200 2,8 and it is amazing (and amazingly heavy ~3lbs) but it looks like you already have another outstanding lens in that range. Having the problems that you describe I would follow Budha's advice (I mean Budha Jones's advice althought the other Budha was also famous for his advices)
