We (I myself incuded) tend to get caught up in all the anticipation and hype over
the newest/best/priciest glass out there and soon to be out there. I'd like to
take some time now to give a little appreciation the the humble Pentax SMC-M's
- All manual, no A setting, they're not new, and they're not Super Taks - kinda the
Jan Brady of the Pentax lens lines.

But I think they're more. I think they might be Marsha.





Next couple days or so I'm going to try to find the time to walk around with
one of these four on my camera and take some snapshots, and post them here.

If anyone has an SMC-M, any focal length, feel free to post also! We can't let these
little beauties go unappreciated.

I'll start with the SMC-M 135 f/3.5.

The light was fading and it was very windy. These were taken on a quick 10 minute
walk that ended abruptly when my little guy's feet got cold (at least I think that's
what he was trying to tell me.) ISO 400 & 800, wide open or stopped down one
mostly.

Some very nices images here. A tribute to both the lenses and yourself. You inspired me. I think I'll take my M glass (28, 35, 50, 150, 200) out for a spin tomorrow.

Wow, that 135/3.5 is a stunner! I bought mine a couple of months ago and have been impressed with it, even as little as I've been able to use it.

Fearview - by all means! The SMC-M 50 1.7 is one of the sharpest M's at most
apertures. Go out and have fun, or take some shots around the house, nothing
fancy.

Andrew, time to put your 135 through it's paces.

TG - really looking forward to seeing what that 150 can do... Don't see a lot of
those around. You've got a 28 & 35 - which ones? There are three 28's and three
35's. I think I'd like to get something wider than 50 in the M's. (I've
got the viv 28 close focus, which is stellar, but I still want an M.)

I have the M 28 2.8 and the M 35 f2. Both are very nice lenses as well. If I ever figure out how to post an image in this forum I shall. I'm new to the digital world and still working things out. Having a lot of fun in the process.

I use flickr.com, but there are several hosting providers.

To use flickr, go to flickr.com and sign up for their free account. Once you have
an account, you can upload photos there using their 'upload photos' link on
their main page, or you can use one of the upload tools they provide that installs
on your PC.

After you have photos uploaded there, you can post them in threads here by
1) going to flickr.com, 2) click on the image you want, 3) click the 'all sizes'
magnifying glass icon at the top, 4) copy the photos URL from the box that says
"grab the photo's URL", 5) in a post in this thread, click the yellow-mountain icon
during a post edit session, 6) paste the URL you copied before into the box that pops up.

The image then appears here. (It sounds more complicated than it is, once you
do it a few times it's easy.)

Here is my favorite shot from today. A quick trip to a local Alberta Recreational Area, Chinook Lake, and have a series of loon shots from today. This shot is approximately 2/3 cropped from a shot with the 400/5.6. No post processing was applied. It does need an exposure adjustment and fine tuning the cropping.

This is a common loon pair that returns to the small lake every year, with little success lately as the lake levels seem to rise every year after they have built their nest. Loons build their nests at water level, but do not build a floating nest as do some of the grebe family.

Great pictures jsherman999, thanks for sharing.

The Pentax M 135/3.5 is a sharp lens with good contrast and nice colors. Unfortunately, the compact design somewhat compromises optical quality, as with most "M" series lenses. With this lens, the most visible defect is some nasty longitudinal chromatic aberration, that is much more apparent than with the previous Super-Takumar and SMC-Pentax 135/3.5 lenses.

i love my M 50/1.7... in fact i love it so much, i have a M 28/2.8 shipping along the way (thanks to a member here ). Renders beautiful color, has that vintage look and produces excellent boke. I still have a lil trouble focusing with it, but i like it so much, my kit lens is always in the bag. I love the backward compatability of Pentax.

jsherman999, your timing for starting a M lens thread is great. Last week i bought my first manual lens (50/1.7) off a forum member, it should arrive next week. You might find me posting some really noob questions here if i get stuck.
Loved seeing all your shots. The SMC-M 135 f/3.5 produces tack sharp pics, love the colours too! Very,very nice.
