Strange thing is I have never bought one. So I hope there is no corollary to my first statement!
I agree. I had FA50mmF1.4 and I tested it out with my F50mmF1.7. They are close really in everything.

This is from F50mmF1.7 at F2

At the end of the day I traded my FA50mm away just because the F version has a more classical external appearance. More old fashion Japanese engineering taste. Not because of the optical qual. That is it.

Its a great lens for the price, that's for sure. The only question is "Is the focal length is right for my needs?". There are also the similar pentax fa35 f2 and sigma 28mm ex f1.8 for your "normal" inexpensive prime needs.

So how many of us bought last night after reading this post?

I can't be the only one.

Damn the internet and 24/7 online shopping.

Here's a shot taken last week with the FA 50mm f/1.4

Sunset Snapper

As a side note, this shot demonstrates the benefit of using a good filter, in this case the B+W 010 UV.

I almost took the train into the city today to go to Adorama, but I made myself wait a little longer.

I do want this lens, I just want to decide whether or not I want to get a macro first.

If I don't go tomorrow, I won't be able to go until Sunday, as they're closed on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

More time to think.

Here's a little competition to the excellent FA 50 1.4. To you 50mm scholars
out there - can you tell what 50 this is by the bokeh & color? (no PP besides a little
contrast adjustment.)

All shot "wide open" (not saying what 'wide open' is with this lens)

Tax return arrived today and I was thinkin' happy thoughts. Wifey snatched that thing away so fast it almost made me cry.

She's a good lady. She knows we got stuff to do and keeps me on track.

I am thinking along the lines of an M 50 f/1.7 or thereabouts ... but that is just me guessing.

I love my FA50 that much that I won't let go of it ... even though I am getting int the M42s at the moment ... I doubt I'd actually get a 50 in the Super Taks ... I don't see the need to double up in this field as I am already very happy with my FA.

Very close, Simon - actually it was the FA 50 1.7. Very, very good center sharpness at f/1.7. I think I like the FA 50 1.4 bokeh better, though.

but sorry: please pay attention!

i saw an interesting test (made 2-3 years ago) about 1.4.
in the test there were differences in 1.4 !!
FA 1.4 was better than F 1.4
(F => +CA and -sharp)

about you is there difference between FA 1.7 and F 1.7?

Who have a "FA 1.7" and a "F 1.7" ?

At least you got a return and thought happy thoughts. I had to pay federal -- for the 2nd year in a row. And, we didn't qualify for the stimulus payment.

Done my share of paying, too. I've learned a few ins and outs over the years.
