Tamron 300mm f/2.8 + Pentax 1.7x AF = 510mm f/4.8 AF

Sadly, hand held the setup is useless below 1/150 sec. But my hands are pretty shaky.

The Cardinal is ISO 400, 1/500 sec.

The Yellow Bird is ISO 800, 1/200 sec.

no post processing, except the crop and resave at higher compression and lower resolution.

510mm at 1/150? Who can complain about that?

300mm x 1.7 x 1.5 (conversion factor) = 765mm (35mm equivalent)

Inverse law = 1/750 sec

1/150 is approximately 2.5 stops slower than ideal. Sounds pretty good to me.

Thats about what you would expect from the K10D.

I assume I can always shoot 2 stops slower than normal to be safe.

I agree, that is pretty good for hand held.

By the way, where did you find a 300mm F/2.8 tamron?

I also have this lens and this TC and they pairs very well, except for purple fringing and CA introduced by the addition of TC. They are pretty sharp together, focus seems quite fast and precise and it can be handheld, as mentioned.

Here are some pics with this combo (all handheld):

White-crowned sparrow: f/8, 1/250s

White-throated sparrow: f/8, 1/125s

Song sparrow: f/8, 1/750s

Chipping sparrow, f/11, 1/350s

It is the Tamron Adaptall-2 300mm F/2.8 LF-IF (model 60B) with Pentax teleconverter AF 1.7X.

Here's a link to info for the Tamron 300/2.8:
Tamron SP Adaptall-2 300mm F/2.8 LD-IF Model 60B

This lens was produced from 1984 to 1992. It can regularly be found used on E-bay. Prices usually vary between 450$ to 750$, depending on the condition of the lens and on the accessories included. It should be noted that this lens has only manual focus. With proper PKA adapter, aperture information will be read by the camera and it will function like a Pentax "A" lens. The only way to make it autofocus is to use it with the Pentax AF 1.7X teleconverter.

A newer version of the Tamron 300/2.8 was made in adaptall mount from 1993 to 2006 (model 360B), but it seems very hard to find. I think there was a new one on ebay for a long time, but it was quite expensive (--> too much).

I think the most recent autofocus version of this lens was never made in Pentax mount (

Thanks for the information. Seems a bit difficult to find though.

That lens would be a great budget alternative to e.g. the Sigma 300/2.8 which goes for around 2000€ ...

Man those are some fantastically sharp images. Are those full crops, or full frames, or neither? I've been shooting wide open, and I haven't archived that level of sharpness. I just put this rig together, rather economically. Maybe I should toss around some cash and go for that PKA adapter to get some aperture control.

I was thinking about a high quality multi-coated rear UV filter to reduce the purple fringe.

Very nice images.

The reason I ask about your images, this image is lightly cropped and lightly sharpened. . It's similar to your shots for sharpness, but it's shot wide-open. I suffer from this pixel peeping madness.

Thank you ! If I remember well, they were cropped a little bit, resized and then sharpened. Yes, this combo is very sharp !

I think it would help you a lot ! And stopping down a bit will help you to get maximal sharpness and improve a bit CA and PF control

Do you think it would help ?? That would be great ! and do you know where to get good quality MC UV drop-in filters ?

It might. Having the last element be a multi-coated piece of glass might help control some of the CA. It's just a normal 43mm screw-in filter.

I have found the 1.7x to magnify the PF also in high contrast conditions (white background) and with the "A" adapter it will add the tc factor 1.5 f-stops so my lens would be more wide open than I'd think. I found on my 360b at least f5.6 on the lens is really good for PF control and sharpness, that would be f10 I think- f11 or f13 if I have the light. I had to add some clearance to the 360b to fit the 1.4x adaptall converter and it worked better on the lens but having autofocus is really great for an old lens I was frustrated missing shots with manual focus before I got mine.

here's one with the 140f adaptall tc

and here's one with the 1.7x afa

a crop at f11 (6.3? on lens) with 1.7x afa

Ebay. It's the 60b mentioned by others. The Lens was very beat up looking. But the optics are in good condition. I bought the TC from a dude here in the forums.

I'm a little confused ... How does a TC make a manual focus lens into an autofocus lens?
Am I missing something?
