Picked up a couple lenses from a friend and an ex-co-worker the past couple days - a
Spotty and some Super Taks, and then later some more Super Taks and a Helios 44.
Since I already have a S-M-C Tak 135 & 200, I figured I'd sell the 150 f/4. After
taking a series of shots this aft/evening, I'm not so sure now.
I hear that alot. And I do not understand it at all. The 150/4 must be one of the most underrated Super Takumars there is. It is excellent, wideopen even. And the focal length is quite different from both the 200 and 135. It's a superb lens and I really do believe it's one of the strongest super takumar tele lenses.
If I were you, I'd keep it. It will not bring in enough cash to justify a selling of it. The bang per buck is too high. I got 2 of them from ebay the past 4 months for about 20$ compare that to my 200mm that cost me 110$ (on the other hand I got a second 200mm for 30$ last week).
It's kind of funny that both of my favourite Super Taks are the cheaper ones, the 55/1.8 and the 150/4.
I took a close look at the back of the lens and was unable to find any obvious scratches. There is, however, a slight cloudiness that appears to be on the inner surface of the rearmost element right smack at the center of the lens. It is only visible in oblique light. Fungus? Botched CLA? I don't know, but the position is potentially poison.
I will do some additional tests tomorrow and a direct comparison with my other 50s. If it does not perform to par with my Rikenon 50/1.7 or my Pentax-M 50/1.7 (both reputedly inferior to the Tak), I will request a return trip to the seller.

Well, in a f/2 comparison with the two other lenses (above), the new Tak performed well behind the competition. I took out my macro lens and managed to get a pretty good picture of the culprit:
The cloudy stuff on the inner surface of the rear element is circled in RED. It sort of looks like a puff of mold to me. I guess I get to ask the eBay vendor if he is interested in honoring his refund policy.

Looks like it could be fungus. Keep it away from your other lenses if you live in a humid enviroment or all your lenses and cameras might look that way, if your unlucky. Google fungus on lenses and compare pictures to yours. Usually they look like small threads or a tiny tiny spiderweb.
Good news is, that the rear element is the easiest to remove and clean . If it really is fungus, see to it that you clean it properly with proper chemicals that kill protein, such as ammoniak (ammonium?). Also make sure that you keep it dry and light where you store it until the cleaning is done, makes it harder to impossible for it to spread.

That should have been disclosed in the description and included a photo of the clouding. I have to say one thing for the sellers on Yahoo Japan Auctions, where I get all my stuff, they are pretty scrupulous about disclosing things like that.
Mike it looks to me that you like your 105 more than your other Taks. I have to admit I like it more than my longer Taks (200 and 300). Great shots from it by the way

The choice is dictated by that being the best focal length considering the fact that the bulk of my shooting is done from the driver's seat of my truck while stopped in traffic. 135 is better for reaching out for folks sometimes, but too tight for catching scenes which are directly to the left or right of me. That the 105 does a great job is just an added benefit. I don't use it all that much when I am on foot....but then I don't really shoot all that much on foot. So yeah, most of my posted photos will come from it.
Nothing would tickle me more than to find that I am single-handedly driving up the price of the things.
