sigma 18-50/2.8 non macro vs macro

looking for opinions on the older (2004) sigma 18-50/2.8 lens and the sigma 18-50/2.8 macro version (started production in 2007?)

the price difference is making me question if the later is worth the extra $175 considering it is only a 1:3 macro and probably wouldn't be of much use - i do most of my macro work with my sigma 70-300 dg apo 1:2.

any sample pics or thoughts from users who have tried both would be much appreciated.

thanks!

I have the older version. Like it very much. Recommended it to a photog acquaintance, who also liked it very much.

Two people in one thread complained of yellow images but never posted samples.

I can get as close as 5 keyboard keys in a shot. Don't do much macro...
