DA40 accessories question

I know I'm getting a DA40, the only question is from where and for how much. So, as a card carrying internet camera geek, I want to accessorize this thing. Looking for feedback.

Lens hood. It seems to take some of the sleek beauty away from this lens. Does everyone use it?

Lens cap. I've read reviews, and the OEM screw-on lenscap seems like a pain. I'm considering getting one of these if I leave the hood on:

30 / 30.5mm Snap-On Lens Cap >>> LIFE TIME WARRANTY <<< - eBay (item 350084350653 end time Aug-05-08 23:26:55 PDT)

Filter. Since this will be for my everyday carry not-so-gentle use camera, I want a filter. Should I get a 49mm filter and put the hood on the filter, or get a 30.5mm filter and put it on the hood?

Thanks!

deuces I use mine with no filter. The hood gives plenty of protection. That snap on lens cap is the ticket. Works perfect.

For a lens cap, the cap of a Fuji film canister works great. It easily pops on and off, and that DIY look gives you instant street cred.

I'm not using hood at all. I ordered normal snap on cap for 49 mm lens and that's the only thing I use. I do carry the original hood around sometimes, but since I tend to use my 52mm CPL via step up ring, it finds it's way on the lens very rarely...

DA 40 cap

I have the cap in the photo. In fact, I have two (since it is only a few cents more for the twopack). It wiggles a little because it is 30mm, but other than that it is great. So much easier than the screw on. Highly recommended.

The 30.5mm filter works better because it doesn't increase the size of the lens (it fits under the hood). However, the hood protects the lens so well, in the end, I decided not to use a filter and recently sold all of mine.

The DA40 is a great lens by the way. Sharp wide open. Super fast. Super cute.

is there anyway to use the DA40 with a 49mm polarizer and the the lens hood as well?

I can't see reason why it wouldn't be possible...

if the cap is screw on like the DA70 it should be fine, but if it's a clip-on like the DA21, then it will not. i'm just not sure which one it is.

Thanks everyone, I've ordered the ebay cap and the DA40. I'm gonna give it a go without a filter.

I removed the hood & cap combo, and put on a 49mm circular polarizer with rubber 49mm hood and 49mm lens cap. The original hood back will screw back onto the polarizer (it does have 49mm threads) I never tried it because I was afraid that having it sit out that much farther than it used to be would cause vignetting (not sure that it would). It was easy to grab the rubber hood and turn it to affect the polarizer. The reason I did it this way, was that I use the same setup (c-pol, hood and cap) for all my lenses with 49mm threads.
