SMC Pentax K 1.8/ 85 mm portrait lens

25th August 08. Saw bidding ended for this lens on Ebay Australia. $1125.

Bid jumped $600 in last 2 bids.

Is the lens that good or was someone just determined to pick it up.

Ugh, I like old lenses but that's just over the top. If I had that much money to toss around, I'd get a Tak 85mm and a 77 LTD, and keep the one I like better.

I don't have that kind of money, so a Jupiter 9 will do

Btw...Kevin...is that a Dime I see in your Avy?

If you mean the photo - its a very worked Datsun 510/ 1600 here in Aus fitted with a Nissan 2 litre turbo and a very much restored body etc. I had a similar over the top Dato back when they were new early 70's which I wish I still had 30 years on.

I was not only watching this one I was bidding on it! Let’s just say I dropped out long, long, long before the auction ended. I am often astonished at the prices some of the old Pentax glass commands but this one seems to have reached new heights. I guess a lens is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. I hope the new owner enjoys it.

I just payed $590 for the Takumar 1.8 which is crazy high. But thats half the money spent for the K mount. Mines suppose to be just as good.
I've read articles saying it went for several hundred dollars a few years back and prices have increased since then

At that price I would have went for the * 1.4 also.

The reason I payed the premium is that it is in mint condition. And I just got tired of being out bid. I pick it up today ( fingers crossed )

I'm happy with my <$400 Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, AND it's autofocus

OK, not sure what $1125 in USD is, but for just a little more you can grab a new Canon 85mm f/1.2 L (which is autofocus as well )

Is that still interesting considering that I do not yet have a Canon body?

Just throwing it out there... Generally Pentax is a great bargain, but when you're talking about hard-to-find items on eBay, prices go berserk!

I remember a FA* 80-200mm f/2.8 once went for $2K. At the time you could have easily bought a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS and a 30D to mount it on!

Yeah, I agree on that. You are right that especially the rare items get skyhigh sometimes.

I also heard once that one should buy camera bodies to fit his lenses. So that is comparable to your recent post.

Only problem is that I get attached to my Pentax body. I simply love it as a great tool. Could I get used to using a Canon, only because it has a great lens attached?

Awesome...I love the "box" look and straight lines. Even though I'm a Honda guy, I would take one in a heartbeat and put an SR20 in it. Too bad they're few and far between here, with all our rust

It is what it is...if you've been looking and can't find (and are in the heat of an auction), you'll pay more just to have it.

It's just a comparison...but one I think we all realize having bought into Pentax already.

I was tempted to buy a Contax 167 with a Vario-Sonnar just to use Contax lenses. And I just got a Yashica today (a what now?) Good thing film stuff is cheap.

Sorry for the tangent

I was just going to say that it probably was someone (or it takes two of them at least actually) who was very frustrated over not being able to get the A*85/1.4.

And I was also wondering if I could pull that trick: to get an older 85/1.8 (is there also an 85/2.0 version) instead of the 85/1.4...doesn't look like that will happen

Please pentax: Give us a DA*85/1.4!!! I will start save for it as soon as I see it on the road map. My little brother has the A*85/1.4 and I'm so jealous .

Mmmh... this is the worst I've seen: 2040 Euros

...and he didn't even let anyone outside Europe bid!
