Square lens hood on D FA 100mm macro

I just tried the Pentax 50mm square lens hood on my 100mm macro, and it's a great fit. The normal 100mm lens hood is huge, and it doesn't do much good at minimum focus because it doesn't extend with the front element. The square lens hood moves with the focus, so is just as effective at infinity as it is at 1:1 macro. I don't know why they wouldn't have designed a hood like this for the 100mm in the first place. Am I missing something?

Hey, that's a great tip! I have one of those hoods and am contemplating a purchase of that macro lens.

My guess is because the front of the DFA100 macro is pretty fragile. The original hood, if impacted, transmits the shock to the body of the lens. Still might try a hood on the front of mine during 1:2 or greater macro. Will be careful.
thanks
