strange circular light bokeh?

a lot ot time ago i saw a particular photo:
lights in bokeh were "circular".
very strange but nice.

i remeber only that it was a m42 lens.

can help me to find this lens?

Any lens with a larger number of curved aperture blades will show a circular pattern for specular highlights. In the above case, it was the Jupiter-9.

it was another lens.

and the circular lights in bokeh were very very very strange!

i don't remember the name...

Maybe a mirror lens which produces donut highlights? This was a Sigma 600.

For the OP...Can you remember any details of any example pictures that were posted? I think I remember something similar to what you describe, but am not sure that I saw it posted here.

i saw a photo not in this forum, but in the web.

it is not Helios-40 and it is not Cosina 55mm f1.2.

lights in bokeh were circular: nice and perfect circumferences!
and the circumference's perimeter (=border line of circumference area) was +brillant than the center area.

That is what I remember as well and I also could not find it.

I used Pentax A 50mm f/1.7 with Pentax F-1.7x AF TC and I shoot this as a 85mm f/2.8 in the combination and I do see some circular bokehs. You may not like the sharp edge bokeh as compared to others that are softer. But I don't mind this as I like things that are different and unique and I prefer for sharpness on a lens over the soft bokeh and hence I like both of my 50mm with FA and A for different purposes

hahaha! yes! thanx hinman, having just used my newly acquired 50/1.4-A w/the 1.7x TC yesterday, it should have occurred to me. Well, that's what I remembered. But it's not an M42 lens so likely not the same for you platinum.

there are lots of lens that have circular bokeh. Sometime, it appears to depend on the light sources too.

If you are specific on the M42 lens, I recommend the Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 from Kiron. Though it may not be the best in old 28mm lens, it is easy to find both in K mount and M42 mount for about $20 to $50 in price range.

The lens has 67mm filter size and it requires a good lens hood to guard against flare. These few shots are done with circular rings in the K version, I assume similar bokeh and number of blades, design, optics in the M42 older version

In general, I would recommend K lens over M42 with exceptions on finding a lens for cheaper cost or something that is unique in the M42 lens collection and not found in K mount. The Jupiter9, many Russian lens, Carl Zeiss are among the exceptions in my list. But like the Kiron and Komine lens, if I find the K mount with a reasonable price, I always opt for the K version for few obvious reasons:

• No need for M42 adapter
• Easier to sell or trade for later upgrade
• Newer lens with less wear, marks, scratches, fungus and others
• Higher retained resale value
