My 35-80mm did exactly the same thing, a small plastic ring fell out of the rear element when I was giving it a clean and from then on it wouldn't zoom correctly.

The lens is at its shortest around 50mm... too bad about it being broken, could you get your money back?

Unfortunately no refund, it was sold as it is from ebay but the listing said "The lens is in great shape."

From left to right:
SP 400/4, SP 80-200/2.8, SP 70-210 3.5-4, SP70-210 3.5-4 (2nd version), SP 300/5.6, 70-210 3.8-4, SP 90/2.5, SP 90/2.5, 24/2.5, 28/2.5, SP 2x (01F), 1.4x (140F).

All on a colorful blanket having fun with my new wireless flash (Metz 48).

And some brief opinions:

SP 400/4: Can be very sharp if you can keep it steady (the white thing behind it is a "door-handle hand rest"). Annoying blue fringing. Very heavy and bulky- have to take girlfriend as sherpa.

SP 80-200/2.8: Does everything it promises, contrasty and sharp. But also quite heavy. Its tripod collar fits the next 3 lenses in the row.

SP 70-210 3.5-4: Fun macro lens due to zoom (up to 1:2 at 210mm). But could be sharper.

SP 300/5.6: I think the quality of this lens is a myth or I have a bad copy. It is really not very sharp if not stopped down to F8. 300mm macro is rare but also very hard to use. Requires tripod and flash, and subjects which land right at the right spot.

70-210 3.8-4: This lens is a sleeper since it can be had for pennies. It is sharp and has high contrast even wide open. I got it as "bonus" with another lens but than used it quite a bit till recently when I got a Pentax 50-200mm.

SP 90/2.5: One of my favorite lenses, it goes everywhere my camera goes. Small and compact, sharp, excellent rendering (... images just look good).

The toads are from the 90/2.5 at f5.6
the bluejay is with the 400/4 at f8

Often ebay sellers want to keep a clean record. I always were able to reach a good settlement when something wasn't as advertised/expected. It is definitely worth trying to contact the seller.

Most of my favourite shots actually seem to come from the Adaptall 2 lenses when I look at my Flickr.

Just got my first SP Adaptall lens--need to get a PKA adapter though. Here is the SP 60-300mm 3.8-5.4 @ 300mm--ISO 1000--f8--1/15th.

That 60-300 looks like a great lens, everything including your photo comes out looking very lively...

I've been playing with the 52bb quite a bit, with and without the extension tube. All the 'lens fetish' pics are with the 52bb, and here a bit of bugs and bokeh.

Thanks Nesster--given it was one of my first shots with the lens, stopped down metered, 300mm, & ISO 1000 in poor light I am very happy. I think the IQ is a good deal better than the auto focus 70-300 LD Tamron. Certainly it performs better @ 300mm.

This is one one pictures taken with my 400 couple days ago. Very sharp lens.
Has anyone ever found a circular polarizer that would fit into the filter drawer of this lense? (as well as the 300/2.8) By the way the filter thread is 43.5 mm.

Lots of great shots to look at in here. I dont have any adaptall-2 lenses myself, I actually wanted to buy a 180 f2.5 SP once but the shop that sold it didnt have the pentax mount adapter and it seemed hard to find and expensive at the time so I didnt want to buy the lens not knowing if Id get a mount adapter or not. Thats life

Wow! This is a very nice lens and tack sharp! Were you able to handheld this or using tripod? I think we both have the same tripod Dolica Proline, can it holds up the camera & lens without any slips? Mine can not hold up the Vivitar 200mm very well.
I ends up buying a Vanguard ballhead instead and it works much better.
