DA* 300mm sales....

I am thinking of selling my DA*300mm, for a number of reasons, and I did what I believe to be a thorough search in the marketplace for previous sales to see what the going rates is on one, and I can't find any previous transactions, sold or not. Is everyone who has one keeping hold of them or am I doing something wrong?

I have a feeling that you have a situation with the DA* 300mm where it does not have mass appeal, and therefore is bought for very specific reasons by people who, for the most part, know exactly what they want / what they are getting.

Probably also a testiment to the performance of the lens too

From a recently completed listing on eBay: $899.00

ProDigital is selling new ones for a little over $1000, so $899 would be an excellent price if you can get it.

I checked online at the usual suspects and they were all around the $1100 range and I didn't see anything on eBay for less than $1000 so I was gonna do mine for about $950 with the Hoya Pro-1 Digital filter... still contemplating it though.

I dunno Buddha. Maybe long lens shooting isn't your style but you'd have to kill me to get my FA*300mm f4.5. It's not used as much as my wider stuff but it's the best lens I own and I have some very good glass. There are better out there but not much. As funny as this will sound, I've used it for wedding work (limited) but it's a fun candid shot lens and great to step back from the couple and allow them some space to be more relaxed.

If you don't shoot with it and never use it. Sell it but if you do, then don't take the loss and try to use it more often.

Well Peter, not only do I not use it a whole lot, but truth be told, I just got engaged and I am 'making preperations'.... so it's going to be either the 300mm or the 200mm (leaning to the 300mm as I can use the 200mm for portraits) and all of my film bodies and MF lenses. I hope to get them listed this weekend.

Not trying to give Buddha a plug....but re the DA*300....I own it and it is well worth the $1k. From taking pics of my son at the pool that instead of being "family shots", showed terrific shots of curved lines of blue water as my 6 year old dove under..... to sports / birds / ships....etc.....it does dish out DA* quality at 300mm. It's larger to pack around but think this can come out of the bag on a regular basis. I would never give mine up unless something more important came along.....like an engagement....Congrats!

NC? My brother's there for a wedding this weekend; maybe I should have him go see you ;-)

Seriously though, I often wish I had funds for a 300mm class lens even though it is usually reserved for specific uses (birding, sports, etc.). My son will be entering his 4th year of soccer in the fall and I'd love to be able to shoot up closer as the action is only going to get better.

I'm slowly saving for it and about halfway there right now but I hear the soft whispers of the K7 as well...
