Vivitar PKA TC problem

I just got a Vivitar 2x TC from eBay, and I tried it with both my FA50, a Vivitar PKA 28mm and my DA50-200. It doesn't get aperture data from either lens, it just shows the "F--" as if using an all manual lens.

Is there some setting or something I missed, or should I prepare a return? I cleaned the contacts without any signs of improvement.

(It works ok as a manual TC, especially with the FA50. But well... it would be nice to get what you pay for.)

Unfortunately I think you missed something.

I think there are six levels of teleconverter for Pentax:

1/ Basic (PK), just magnifies.

2/ Auto (APK), can control auto stop down (like with 'M' lenses).

3/ With contacts (PK/A, KAX) allows the use of the 'A' position on 'A' lenses.

4/ With contacts + AF (PAF?) as above + autofocus

5/ With contacts + AF + powerzoom contacts (PZ-AF) as above + in lens autofocus

6/ PENTAX F AF 1.7X ADAPTER as above + autofocus on manual lenses

I don't think any get aperture data back from the lens (maybe the Pentax F but I don't know).

If I understand correctly, a FA or DA lens connected with that teleconverter should act as an A lens with 2x the FL on a K20D?

Anyway, someone over at dpreview kindly directed me to this thread.

Just received my Vivitar MC TC 2x PK-A. Need help.

So I think it might be time for some surgery...

Yes, just like an 'A' lens. When the lens is in the 'A' position the camera will control the aperture
and when it is not, the camera will display F----, will measure the light and adjust shutter speed/ISO.

I don't think surgery will change anything.

Then I think there's something wrong.
