Filters on the 70mm LTD

OK, I mentioned in a thread that one of the things I liked about the 77LTD over the 70LTD was that you can put filters on the 77. I got a reply that the 70 does take 49mm filters.
I'm just not seeing it. There is a threaded ring on the front of the hood that can be removed, but it isn't threaded on the inside for filters. So, i figure take the ring off and mount a filter backwards.
That's a non starter too, or at least it is with the 49mm filters I tried it with.
So, can someone explain to me in very small words how to mount a filter onto the 70LTD? It's almost like I'd need a series adaptor to do it.
Thanks

Forgive me if I've misunderstood...

To mount a filter on the DA 70 ltd you 1) remove the hood from the DA 70 and then 2) screw in 49mm filter on the DA 70's filter threads.

Piece of cake my friend.

To mount a 49mm filter on the DA 70/2.4

1) Unscrew lens hood from lens
2) Screw 49mm filter into threads on the front of the lens
3) Screw the lens hood into the threads on the filter

Works like a charm.

The illustrated guide :P Just screw the filter on like you would on any lens.

I dunno, it's like I don't have the same lens as you guys. I can turn the hood all day and it doesn't unscrew.
Do I need to kill a chicken first or anything like that?

I might have just got it, the illustration helps. I'll be back...

Got it. The retainer for the hood on my lens was on pretty tight. I hadn't turned it hard enough.
Thanks for the quick replies.

Until now, I had no idea what you meant about removing the ring. I had no idea that part was also removable.

Grab the part with the words on the hood. Turn that and you'll twist the whole thing off.

You need to send me a chicken sandwhich first. Then grab the hood by the 49mm marking, not above where you pull it out.

New out of the box that hood is screwed on tight. It took me a while to build up the nerve to unscrew it. It will unscrew. Really

How many pentaxforum.com members does it take to unscrew a DA 70mm lens hood? lol

They should have packaged it with the hood off.

BTW, now that you've got the hood off, you might experiment to see if it's of use with any other lenses. I find that with the telescoping part retracted, it's the *perfect* hood for my M28/2.8. No vignetting, and it protects from flare better than any third party hood I've tried - although I haven't tried the square hood originally designed for this lens. I'm also having some success using the hood in its fully extended position on my M100/2.8, although I haven't really tested to see just how effective it really is.

Nice suggestion Marc! Most of my lenses are 49mm, and I'd never even thought to try that out.

Good point, Marc. I have used my DA 70 hood on my FA 50 and have gotten good results.
