Kit Lens Comparison

SMC F 35-70 f:3.5-4.5 vs. DA 18-55 f:4-5.6 version II..... Besides, of course, the difference in focal length parameters, which lens has higher IQ?

I doubt that the 35-70 is worth buying if you already have the kit lens.

I have the Rikenon 35-70 which scores identically on Photodo and it stays in my kit bag. I use the 18-55mm AL II kit lens for probably 80% or more of the photos I take. Most of the rest are taken using a SMC-M 75-150mm zoom, which is a very good (and very cheap) lens.

I disagree. I think the F 35-70 is a notable step up in IQ from the DA 18-55 lens, although admittedly I only have version I to compare. And the close-focus mode produces for me much better results than the DA lens can. Plus I find the added reach quite handy. The value added by AF ( and thus auto-SR setting) may explain why Andrew doesn't use his rikenon much. or it could just be personal taste, who knows.

For the $50 or less it will set you back, I think the F 35-70 is the best bargain Pentax lens period.

Notable - interesting. Maybe the Pentax is better than the Rikenon, though the MTF data on Photodo doesn't suggest that. Have you got any photos that you can post, comparing the two?

I'll put it this way. You could offer me $50 for my 18-55 and I'd have the money in my wallet and lens in your hand before you could say "Thanks, nice doing business with you." But you could offer me 10 times what I paid for the 35-70 (which wasn't much) and I wouldn't dream of letting it go.

I agree, I sold a 35-70 a couple of months ago and regret it. It was as sharp as the 18-55 & I miss the 'macro' mode. But I'll keep my 18-55WR for the wet days.
