Poor lighting adjustments

OK, I'm almost embaressed to post this shot, but I really need some help in how to improve clarity. We don't use these shots so I normally do not take them (of the flat track guys), but I was trying to get my camera set to the arena's lighting. I am a freelance writer and by no means a photographer (but I am trying to learn), so please keep you explanations geared toward the simple-minded.

If I remember right, the ISO was set pretty high just to be able to get the shot (hence all of the grain). The camera is a *ist DL with the 18-55 kit lens and was shot in jpeg.

Thanks!

Remove kit lens. Attach better lens, hopefully one that has a larger maximum aperture such as f2.8. Sigma makes an 18-50 f2.8 still available from Cameta Camera for about $275. There are others.

It looks like there is still a little motion blur, so a faster shutter speed, and practice with panning, will help.

Thanks, and yes, the kit lens will be going very soon (or as soon as I can decide on what else to purchase). The problem is that I haven't found a local shop I can go check out the differences, and without knowing much of anything photography-wise, it is tough to just order something online.

Panning: You're right, I have NO experience in that area. These shots were the first time I had ever done that. Usually I am shooting big mud bikes in a pit and they travel much slower.

Thanks again, I will look into the other lens you suggest.
