Ethics Versus Photoshop

It was a hot humid day and the sky was featureless. Should I 'borrow' some sky from another shot, or show it how it was? Discuss.

Given the overall mood of the shot, couldn't you just mask it and darken it up a bit more?

If it wasn't there, it wasnt there!

Depends, do you consider yourself a creative artist or an historian documenting factual occurances for posterity?

Ethics etc

Today the sky was much more interesting, a polariser helped.

I really believe it's up to the individual. There are "purists" that think a photo should never be altered/manipulated and there are those who take a more artistic view. There's nothing wrong with either of those opinions. As long as you don't try to take something that was manipulated and pass it off as "real", I don't see a problem.

Are you a creator or recordist?

It actually looks to me a bit like the sky has been photoshopped out.

To me the only real fault with the sky in that shot is it's brightness, so I'd agree with Jodokast96 and burn it a bit.

I think using a polarizer to make a more striking photo is equivalent to using photoshop to do the same thing (which I don't have a problem with - providing it's well done )

I want to get a polarizer, I have polarized glasses, and I keep seeing these incredible colors which aren't there when I take my glasses off and look through the camera. I have a theory that some of us who might be accused of "over processing" now and then may just wear polarized or tinted sunglasses most of the day, and we're trying to recapture how we see the world.

Theory nothing, it's a fact. I do it all of the time, and never realize it until someone else points it out.

I personally have no issue with filters, glass or digital if all it does is enhance what is already in the scene regardless if your eyes saw it or not at the moment of capture. For me part of the joy of photography is rediscovering things in a photo i never noticed before. As for cutting and pasting from another source as others mentioned before i would consider that as an illustration or a photomontage,...the only ethical issue i see is in the context of how you present it rather than how it was made.
