played with my first proper camera solidly for the weekend trying to understand all the buttons and knobs, so any help would be very much appreciated.

Looks nice, a little oversharpened. Shallower DOF would make it more interesting

Wipe the plate on the back right. Change the angle of the spoon in relation to the cup. Tablecloth distracts. Try something plainer. Open aperture a bit more to blur the background more. (This might allow a bit faster shutter speed which could darken the background as well.)
