Critique on 1 year old portrait session requested

Here's my second shoot in the poppies this year. One year old little boy. Mom ordered over 40 prints. I think thats a record for me!

I am dissappointed in the lack of crispness in this photo . . .
1.

I like the energy of the first one. Maybe some pp to bring out the image more?
Minor adjustments in Lightroom gave me this (Hope you don't mind):
(Contrast, clarity and blacks)

On my monitor it looks like you went overboard with his skin. Hope it's not catching.

I think somewhere in the middle of the orginal and the twocolor's is where you need to be. I will say I would also clone out what ever is on the right side behind his head.

Yes, I agree. The thing behind his head was the stool his mom thought would be Sooo cute to put him in. Now, this was not a pretty wicker chair or anything, just my photographers step stool. I humored her, she ended up not minding it, although I DO. I croped most of the stool out of this one, but I'll have to go in and crop out the bar behind his head - missed that part

Photo 1 happens to me all the time when taking shots of my kids. Too narrow a DOF means that their (closer) earis super sharp but the face is not... or they moved (as kids tend to do). Try a little higher F stop and hope they don't move. Shot 2 is very good! It too is a tiny bit soft but those big blue eyes make it appear very sharp.
