Split Tone ?

I'm experimenting with ways of producing split toned mono prints from digital rather than smelly darkroom chemicals. The results can be quite subtle, I hope they show on screen as well as they do in print.
I'm interested in your opinions.

I really like the one of the shipwreck. The one through the window seems very dark and lacking detail on my monitor.

I like the two tone effect on this subject. The top gives the detail of the wood grain. Int the second I think you might not need the bottom half and just frame with the top part of the door?

Same comment as above. I dont like the second composition much. if you have other versions maybe it can be cropped creatively. The only way I can think of with that photo is to make a square print.

I Love the first one though. The tone makes it look like I can just touch my screen and feel the wood. I think one way it could be improved is to go back there again after a storm to get more dramatic clouds (or you can just shop it).

Thanks for the comments, very useful. I do in fact go there quite often. Here i a more dramatic shot from the same day. a little O.T.T maybe ?

Are you scanning film or working with digital color then converting it? I like this technique a lot, particularly the first image. Are you using the duotone feature in Bridge, or is this Lightroom, or something else?
I've been converting color into B&W and then adding duotone in PS3(see below) but this might be a better way to go.

re; split tone

Hello FHPhotog,
The pics I've posted here began as raw files from my K10d.
I use Elements 6 layers to tone the image, selecting >adjustment layer and clicking on hue saturation, then tick the colorize box. Next adjust the hue and saturation to give a sepia tone. After clicking ok, adjust the opacity of the new sepia layer so that some of the colour of the background layer shows through, somewhere between 70% and 90% according to your taste.
Sometimes I might select another hue saturation layer and de-saturate to black and white, then reduce opacity to around 40% for more bite.
I'm sure that PS3 has even more scope than elements.

I hope this helps.
