Deck Post (b&w)

I kind of liked the look of this in monocolor.

Any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated.

EXIF data includes:

Pentax K100D
f/8
1/60 sec
ISO 200
55mm
Pattern metering

Interesting. But maybe get closer, or show in different environment

Environment would be difficult unless the deck was dismantled, however, the "closer" comment intrigues me. Would you "chop off" some of the annular rings? Keep the angle?

Thanks for the comment.

I just feel that in the current composition, the picture does not make enough impact on the viewer

ARe you talking about shooting the image differently, or manipulating it in PS?

I like the texture and grain patterns in wood but don't get that here. A higher angle and maybe deeper dof might work. The circular patterns and cracks might look good directly head on?

Mount your camera on a tripod and shoot with smaller aperture to get a longer DOF

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I may have a chance to reshoot this one and I'll let you know how it turns out.

I’m sorry to say, but I simply feel that it looks a little boring. There is no emotional response in the picture.
Nothing to really lead the eye, except the center, or the chopped of sides.

Maybe more of the boat in the OOF background would help. Or different lighting / shadows. Another illumination might make for a more creative image, to peak the imagination. What did you do for lighting ? Or maybe a film shot, instead of digital. And tried out with different B&W film, for checking out various output.
There is potential, but it isn’t there yet.

Ron Bigelow has some great articles :

check out, e.g. figure 10: Lines (Grab Attention)

Or maybe take the picture, after the rain. There are many possibilities. But I feel the image needs to be more dynamic, to have more of an impact on the viewer
