For me the hood ornament isn't completely sharp on the tip (paws and head), and if it could have been, maybe changing your angle slightly, that would have helped it to go with the dof to fade from front to back more evenly. Still a great shot though.
Your spider shot has got to be one of my favorite spider shots I have ever seen! awesome. I could imagine you playing with the pp to see what you could do to make the spider stand out even more...
I think the hood orniment is blurred due to lack of depth of field, as I note you shot af F2.4. I guess it depends on what you want to achieve, I like the hood fading out of focus, but to get the entire orniment sharp, you either need to have it all on one plane, so it is all in focus or stop down more. It is a tough call.
The spider is an interesting angle, and again any lack of focus is the same issue of depth of field vs interesting view point.
Maybe on the spider, since youare stopped down well at F8, it is the point of focus that you could have played with just a little, focusing further back, perhaps more on the thorax. Just as a reminder, when dealing with hyper focal distance and range of acceptable focus, it is 1/3 in front of optimum focus and 2/3 behind. You are probably focused just a hair (no pun intended) too close.
First ones very tasteful and class is shown
Second one is graphic and nicely composed
cheers

Glad to hear that you submitted the spider to the PPG... If i see it during my voting it'll get a firm YES from me. Awesome and unique shot!
