The Barn
ISO: 400   Aperture: F5.6   Shutter Speed: 1/180s   Camera: PENTAX K-7   Focal Length: 28mm

Capitol Reef, Utah. We passed this barn at various times of the day and saw it in different light. I think the light at late afternoon was best.

A picturesque scene.
Beautiful.
Would have been perfect with the sun shining softly from camera right, but this is still a lovely result.
Well done.

That's a popular barn. How many pics have been taken at that scene? The light is great.

One problem is that the compression makes the diagonal lines appear very jagged.

The late afternoon light certainly does light the scene nicely. But, I think I would've preferred different framing and a different FOV. The cropped fence/guardrail and the bits of the bushes on the right side are distracting.

Real nice shot Ole. I had firefox less than full screen and with the top cropped it looked even better. But I love old farm buildings so that's a biased opinion.

Hi Ole,

This barn is popular, no doubt!

This is a tough one to say anything but positive things about - it's minor stuff at best.
  1. I do like the fact that the feeder to the left and behind the barn is in shadow so it doesn't stick out as much.
  2. I am thinking you could crop out the bushes on the right - to the right edge of the road would be a possibility or simply re-framing or composing the shot.
  3. I would be interested in a different angle or FOV too. Sometimes it's interesting to compare them!
  4. The framing of the sky within the image is quite balanced
  5. I'd be curious if brightening up the shadows just a bit would improve or detract on the overall impact of the image - just a thought.
Overall, a very solid image and just minor things as indicated above.

Regards,
Marc

Marc, I cropped further as you suggest and that helps the photo. I also brightened the shadows (except for the feeder) - that is an improvement, too, although the effect is somewhat lost when viewing in the browser. Thanks for the feedback.

Marc, As for different angles I have one with the barn out to the right. My idea was to form a line from the field to the left up the roof to the cliff. That didn't work.

My other one is a vertical which might work if cropped. But overall, I prefer the one originally posted, with the canges you suggested.

Yes, I see what you are saying - definitely the original post with changes has the best impact! Of course, there is a road with occasional vehicle traffic to be watchful of...

EXCELLENT composition! Now, for the improvements...

That cropping is too tight, IMO, and the original is too open (but better than the tight one). The colors are also a little on the flat side.

Here's the original followed by my proposed edits so you can compare side-by-side:

I pulled the top/bottom down just a bit, as well as the left side. Then I did highlights -15%, selective colors yellow > blacks +25%, saturation -5, hue -1:

And maybe I'm going a bit overboard here, but why not add some contrast and darkness to those railing shadows?
