I decided to break the bank, and spent a whopping $8 on a couple of umbrellas from Deal Extreme. Here is my first attempt. Not looking for critique on the picture / composition, as I just plopped him in a chair and let at it. Just wondering how I did on the lighting. This shot is with a reflective, and no bounce. There is also a bit of natural lighting coming in the window from my right. Umbrella is to my left.

It looks like the light has bounced of his shirt onto his jaw on the left hand side. That's not necessarily the lighting though, maybe just the choice of shirt colour for the picture.

The ambient light seems to be as powerful as the flash, taking away from the lighting effect the flash provides. You'd either need to increase flash intensity or bring the light source closer to the subject (if in manual mode) to increase its contribution to the lighting of the subject.

Or close the curtains, working in more dull conditions to limit the ambient light.

Thanks for the info guy's. I'll keep that all in mind next time I'm playing about. Especially the ambient light coming in.
