For Sale: Canon 40d+Extras
Listed: 11-04-2009, 01:24 PM [Contact Seller]

Well, I enjoyed my brief soiree with Canon, but now that my trip is approaching it's time to ditch it for something smaller and lighter. I had planned on the Olympus E-p1 or Panasonic GF1, but after seeing the samples out of that delicious little K-x... Pentax here I come again. Anyways, figured I'd list it here as well in case anyone was looking for a decent Canon body.

Sales pitch I posted on photographyontheweb, copied and pasted:

I've enjoyed my 40D for the two short months I've had it, but I need something smaller and lighter for an upcoming trip. Like I said, I've only had it for 2 months, so it's not seen a lot of use by me. I'm not sure of the shutter count from the previous owner but he most recent files have numbers like 100-9806. The 40D body has two small marks by the big wheel in back that are purely cosmetic, and the camera is otherwise in perfect functional condition.

It also includes:
-one battery+charger
-2 4gb Sandisk Extreme III cards
-A Digital Concepts 952AF flash (full tilt and swivel, surprisingly useful)
-A Rocket Blower
-a set of white/black/grey metering/whitebalance cards
-a very comfy neoprene "Smugmug" strap
-two "RPS Studio" external flash slip-on diffusers
-a Sekonic "Flashmate" flash meter
-the 40D manual

All packed into a Tenba Large SLR/Laptop Messenger bag (~$100 new).

Since I lack the original box, software (outdated by now), and computer transfer cord (cheap anyways), I'm asking just $630 shipped for all of this. The sooner I can sell, the better, so drop me a line. Pictures can be provided on request (I'll have to borrow a camera to take them).

what did you think of the D40? I tried my buddy's 40D and really liked the size and the ergonomics, how come you are selling it? I thought it wasn't too bulky.. at all

I thought it was a nice camera. Solid, and very fast in operation. The fast AF and 6.5 fps are something I'll definitely miss, but the K-x is a good bit faster than the K20D I had before. I liked the IQ from my K20D a bit better, especially the jpegs, but in RAW the 40D files can really sing.

It's not an incredibly bulky camera, no, but the trip I'm going on is a month of low-budget backpacking-style travel in south america, and it's just more weight and bulk than I want to deal with. When cramming 30 day's worth of necessities into a mid-size backpack, every bit counts. I also want a camera I can stick in my camelback and take a run with without really noticing it's there.

I actually used an EF 85mm f1.8 exclusively for the entire time I had it. Sometimes I wished for a wide angle but it was a fun challenge, forcing yourself to see in just one focal length. And it's a superb lens. The experience really fueled my lust for the 77 limited. Someday...

I got to try out a friend's 300 f2.8 L and 70-200 f2.8 L at a couple sports events he was shooting, and they were really quite nice. He ended up buying my 85, and he's using it to shoot hockey this weekend.

Just curious. How did you like the Temba messenger bag? I've been thinking about this bag. Thanks, and good luck with the sale. It's a good deal for someone.

Horses for courses. I'd still probably prefer the 40D for anything fast-paced, and it's a lot more rugged with its metal body and partial sealing. Thanks for the bump.

I found the messenger bag pretty useful, as I was able to fit a largish DSLR, a mid-size laptop, clothes for a weekend, some bulky charger cords and a variety of other necessities into it on a few occasions. My only caveat is that the strap is a little longer than I would have liked it, even at its shortest level of adjustment. This is probably mostly due to the fact that I am a short person. At worst the strap length slightly interfered with my usual walking rhythm due to the bag hanging against my leg while full of 15-20lbs. worth of stuff. The rearrangeable dividers inside are really helpful, though, for organizing everything and keeping it in place.

Sorry for not replying sooner, yes it is still available but there are three other offers from another forum in line. I'll let you know if those don't work out.

Erik, it seems your stint with Canon didn't last long.
Welcome back.

Do I detect a hint of "I told you so?" All in good fun, I'm sure.

For the record, my stint with Canon lasted exactly as long as intended: I bought it to do some portraits for which I found the 85mm ideal, with the intent of replacing it with something more compact and versatile for my South America trip this december. Hence, the K-x.

I'll miss that lens though. Someday if I've got a bunch of money I'll pick up a 5D and another copy of the 85 to stick it on and have some fun with it. That is, after I've got me some Pentax limiteds...

Not at all Erik.
The cam models matter less and less to me as time goes by...

Enjoy the K-x - it'll be a nifty little performer, esp. with a 77 plonked on it!

I'm finding the same. They've all been good cameras.

How I wish... if I can scrounge up the extra funds I'll be picking up a DA 40 for the trip, but that 77mm will still have to wait a while...
