i need a free program, preferably, that can convert numerous raw files into jpegs all at once, not one by one which is too time consuming. what do you suggest. thanks!
I have done over three hundred conversions using the Pentax software at one time.
It took 6 hours but it did the conversions. As many photos you highlight it will convert them. However if you have photos in different folders it will only do the conversion for the amount of files in that folder.
I tried to do a batch conversion but I get a warning saying that I can't perform this task in 'free mode'. What ever that means. You are talking about Silkypix - right? Sadly, the software that came with my K10D states in the 'Read Me First" file that it does not support a K10D. Pretty much useless.
Can someone recommend another program other than Silkypix that will do mass RAW to .jpg conversions?
Yes, Faststone is free, but I find it doesn't do a particularly good job of converting raw files.
Here's a shot I took last year covering an agricultural fair for a local magazine. The version on the left was converted using faststone, the version on the right was converted using PPL. No post-processing was done on either image, just a straight conversion from raw to jpeg.
Camera used was K100D with a Sigma 24mm lens.
In previewing the image, it's smaller than I expected, but I think you can tell the difference easily enough.
I still use faststone for some things, but converting from raw isn't one of them.

Try "extracting a JPG" with Photo Browser (not Photo Laboratory) rather than converting/saving as a JPG.

But of course, ymmv.
I was throwing it out there as a possibility. Irfanview (already mentioned) is another free program that does it.
I don't use FastStone for anything other than viewing RAW (PEF) files, since Windows can't do it. My RAW converter is the UFRaw plug-in for GIMP. I also prefer to do one image at a time.
