Just when you thought the dumb questions were over

I have Photoshop 6.0. How do I convert to B&W? Do I use grayscale, desaturate or something else? Grayscale seems to dull the contrast. I did check the photoshop help files and it indicates to use the threshold command but that seems to make the photo look more like a pen and ink drawing or something.
Appreciate the help.

Thanks, Susan

Thanks Matt. I downloaded all the info yesterday and posted a couple of pics in "Post your Pics" forum using two of the techniques. I also used the methods from the site Tim suggested and the difference in each of the methods was amazing. I Will have to do some more playing around to get it right as one method may be better for one photo but not for another. I do appreciate the help.

more advanced B&W conversion techniques

A significant improvement on the double hue / sat adjustment layer trick
from a very cool Photoshop theory site:
Ra togreyscale2 - TechSlop
Provides a good dissection of Russel Brown's double hue / sat adj layer method & trumps it with this:
"My variation on Brown's variation: Leave the HSB Ad-Layer in Normal mode. Use the drop-down and fall-offs to select a range.
Use the L slider to lighten or darken the range. If you want yellows lighter, then make them lighter.
If you want greens darker, then make them darker. No sense in messing around with H and S.
Simple and direct. Extremely controllable and predictable. Even makes use of the entire range selected using the fall-offs. "

Detailed conversion strategy:
Digital Black and White
