grainy B&W - not from high ISO ?

been trying to get nice atmospheric black and white portraits converting from colour

Had a go using K10 at max ISO but it just doesnt give the soft effect for portraits I am after (see pic, especially the cheek area). ISO 100 conversions lack any real 'feel'. Suspect 400ASA may have been a good choice and add some grain later in Elements 2.0

any suggestions ?

This is a good question.
Im hunting the perfect "feel" ISO fir b&w conversions myself. I find that my body set on "strong" NR with around ISO 800 gives me the feel I like for facial shots. I don't apply NR during PP though.
Think I will follow this thread for a while, see what pops up
