Help with Vista?

Solved the problem of putting the files where wanted in last thread. Thanks for that. Now there is a new problem. All the files that went to the file K20D#2 have been put into different sub folders according to the day they were uploaded. Might be able to live with that but don't want to. The big problem is it also changed all my file numbers and started them back at 001! Arghh. Here I have all the file numbers up around 8000 shots and bamm its ruined. Luckily I still have all the memo cards full - so they could be downloaded again. How do I stop the sub date folder groupings and keep my original file numbers intact?
I really am hating Vista. Thought about having computer man wipe it off and put XP on. He said that some new items don't have drivers for XP and that this could cause problems later on. Bummer. Could Vista be left on computer in a dormant mode and put XP on to use? If possible would this cause problems? Already tired of Vista trying to nanny me. I am no computer wiz. Now I feel like I am in kindergarten again.
thanks

I don't think Vista would do that. Normally it is the download program preferences that would control if subfolders are created and photos renamed or converted to dng. When I download into Bridge I have it setup to sub by date, no rename or convertion. As for Vista trying to nanny, all can be turned off if you don't want it but must pay attention to possibly harming your system, we do just that, protecting the system ourself by pay attention, on XP. MS tried to make it simple for everyone by automating the process which annoys many in the end.

I have Vista on my work machine, and I quite hate it. The computer doesn't play nice with the network, full file sharing means you don't get to play with Vista's files unless you are on Vista's keyboard, it bogs the machine down, it's decided to randomly lose its mouse and keyboard, and the graphics are ugly. I happen to like Outlook Express, and I dislike the new and improved Windows Mail, and the constant nagging from the Security Program is particularly annoying.
I'll either see if I can force a dual boot on it, or if I can't, I'll just format it and install XP Pro.

Vista won't rename files. It must be whatever program is automagically importing them (one of the reasons I don't like automagic programs).

I'd suggest reconsidering putting all your files in one folder. It may be nice now, but months/years from now, it will make it impossible to find some of your earlier shots.

I put all my files into the Pictures folder, with each shoot/download into a separate folder named "YYYY-MM-DD", for example 2008-11-06 if I downloaded them today. If you'd like, you could even put a text descriptor on the end like "2008-11-06 birthday party". The key is to put the date in yyyymmdd format first and then your folders are sorted chronologically. Makes it much easier to find.

I hated Vista at first as well (and I've used Microsoft since 1985). I even waited until early this year after Service Pack 1 to buy my computer, but I was still running into all kinds of problems. I finally gave up and reinstalled Vista from the OEM disks that came with the computer. This time, all the crap-ware that Gateway installed was NOT installed. Since then, Vista has run nicely (that's been a couple of months ago). I've changed my tune about Vista, and reinforced my hatred of bloatware/crapware. If things get bad enough, consider a fresh reinstall of Vista without all the "extras" that your computer company wants to give you.
