Epson V300 vs V500

I'm thinking about buying my own scanner and just getting my 35mm only developed at the minilab. Because they charge lots of money and the scans aren't that good.

I was looking at the V500 cause it seems to be a nice fast and good flatbed for film scanning, but it's like $200. The V300 is cheaper, but is it a lot worse? I only plan on scanning at 2400DPI or so.

I really wanted to stick with epsons because they have linux support, so I might not have to buy vuescan.
