Printing

Help! When I print large 8.5 by 11 pics, the picture looks very thin on the paper. Does the sensor have a special aspect ratio? Before I purchased my K10D, I used Canon compact cameras and I never had this problem when printing that size.

The default aspect ratio for pentax camera's is 2:3, most point ant shoots are 4:3, standard print/monitor ratio...Some cropping will likely have to occur prior to printing. What software are you printing from?? Most recent photo editing software allow for cropping during printing..

Now, just as an observation, printing on 8.5x11 is not a standard size print for any camera. Even with your point and shoot, some cropping had to take place. I think your software did it all for you, which is why it seemed seamless.

In this case, you need to load the picture onto an image processing program first to size it to the paper you want to print onto. If you don't have any or don't want to use the Pentax-provided ones, download Picasa and it will do OK for 8x10, 5x7, 4x6 and other common sizes.

You also need to tell you printer what you're printing onto so it sizes the image properly, whether you want an edge or no edge, etc.

From camera image to software to printer, it all has to play nice!

Are all D-SLRs like that? This is going to be a learning curve, but like the K10D I will master it.

Print 8X12 instead. All SLRs have a 3:2 aspect ratio.

Cheers!

Most printer software will allow you to preview all the adjustments you've made before you hit the Print button. If the picture isn't the way you want it you can just hit Cancel and go back and do all the adjustments others have suggested. I use it every time and it's saved me a heap of paper and frustration.

When I crop my photos, I do it according to the ratio of my expected print size. That meant in Lightroom I had to create a special "297x210" option in the crop menu. If your software doesn't give some default options of standard photo paper sizes, then you can always do it manually.

If you're bringing it into Photoshop then print from there. And think inches instead of pixels. It's been a while since I've messed with 7 but I believe instead of hitting Control P go to the file menu and it will allow you to print with preview. (Or something similar) In that window you can actually resize the final output while still keeping it at 300DPI.

Thanks for your info! How do I obtain those "K10D proud owner "graphics? I want to put one in my profile. I see them for all kinds of Pentax cameras on other peoples' posts.
