Combining two JPEGs into a single one

I seem to have inherited my Grandfather's interest in stereoscopy and have started to have a dabble. I have been encouraged by my first results and have printed out a few stereo pairs using MS Word to place the left and right images side by side in the same document, then printing at a size that I can view in my inherited Holmes viewer. The limit to quality is my inkjet. As digital commercial printing is now so cheap and so good I would like a way to print a side by side pair of JPEGs on a 6"x4" which I could then mount easily for the Holmes viewer. So, how do I combine a pair of JPEGs into a single JPEG file? I remember watching my Grandfather meticulously mounting his stereoscopic pairs. How simple the process is now on the computer. I run a Mac, not a PC, if anyone has a suggestion for software. Love my K200D! Would like to chat with anyone about stereo photography. I've just started.

Hi there,

Do you happen to have Photoshop Elements or the like that came, perhaps, with your scanner? If so, it's really easy.

Open one image, do an Image Resize (whatever it may be called in your app) and resize it 200% horizontally, making sure your original image stays flush to the left (or right); usually there's a 9x9 grid letting you specify where you want the original image placed in the resized image. Then open the second image, copy & paste onto the first one, and align. When priting, select "Fit to paper" and you won't have to worry about resizing it.

If you don't have an app that can do this, I recommend The Gimp, which is a freeware alternative to Photoshop. Little bit of a learning curve to it, but for what you want to do, it should'nt be that bad. If you're willing to spend a little money (but not as much as for Photoshop or Elements), then GraphicConverter used to be my fave.

Personally, I got a russian stereo adapter for my Helios-44M and shoot with that :-)

Thank you RawheaD. Can we have this conversation on the other thread. I foolishly sent this thread twice and the other one has taken off.
Such a simple solution to my enquiry. Great.
I am intrigued with your equipment. Am I right in thinking that your stereo converter fits over the lens, rather than replacing it, like the Loreo 3D lens In A Cup T? ∞

I can't find the "other thread" so I'll just answer here: yes, the russian adapter CKŲ-1 fits right over the lens (screws into the filter thread). :-)

Dear Rawhead - I'd certainly give one of those gizmos a go. I'm hoping to hear some comment about the Loreo Lens in A Cap which I believe fits on the camera rather than over the lens. Here is the link for the other thread. Hope it works for you now. Cheers.
