Once in a while some PEF:s cant be processed by Aperture and I get the Unsupported Image File message. It does not help to rebuild the library.
Anyway, I have noticed a strange thing, it only happens with images with a complex pattern. Like foilage in the image attached.
Very wierd.
Any ideas anyone?? (I use a K20d by the way)
Yes, I ran the VACUUM also without success. It is not really a big problem as it works if I convert them to DNG as you are doing.
But it is weird that it only happend to a certain kind of images.
I have had this happen too, and not just with PEF files. My assistant at weddings uses a Nikon D700 and some of her images come up as unsupported. Occasionally they will also preview an image from a prior shoot, but when I click on them the correct image comes up.
I like some of the new features in Aperture 2, but I wish they had gotten out a few more bugs!
3 should be coming out this month or next. There are no leaks, but word is that users will be rather pleased. WWDC is early June and there should be some info by then.
This problem is pretty common. When a new camera comes out, Apple has to build support for that image format into the Camera RAW support library, which requires an update. Even trivial changes in the EXIF data can be a problem. When Pentax was bought by Hoya, the change in the manufacturer tag in the EXIF data actually made RAW files from the K20D unreadable.
Here's an example: If I select in Aperture a photo shot on my K20D and choose "Lift Metadata" I get a normal metadata lift. If I select a K2000/KM PEF file and do that, I get an error message saying "No Metadata" even though metadata is plainly displayed in the Inspector.
So it looks like the Mac OS is having trouble sometimes finding the metadata, and other times it has trouble manipulating it.

But I donīt think this is a metadata problem since Aperture are only having problems reading some files. And in my case it seems like it is connected to certain image elements. My guess is that it is the PEF compression causing this.
