24 bit or 48 bit scanning

I tried scanning some negs at 48bit tonight and they did scan but opening them in PhotoShop Elements 5 it will not let me change anything. And right as it was opening the photo, PSE said it was converting colors. What is causing this problem? Can Windows not utilize 48bit color or is it PSE?

I suspect that is an elements limitation. I have no problems with scanned images at 48 bit with CS3 on Windows.

Some image editors can't use certain tools with 48bit colour and 16bit greyscale.

My PhotoShop 7 has this same problem. So I guess it's my earlier versions of Photoshop software. I can't afford to upgrade so I'll stick with 24bit for now. Thanks for the help.
