In Your Photos -- From Washed Out To Punchy I explain my usual process. There is also a follow-up article with a detailed example.

P.S. Cute cat!

It definitely depends...

...but I generally fall under the category of "alot."

You can accomplish quite a bit of artistry just by playing with the camera calibration settings and white balance. I don't use Photoshop these days, but I find that I can be plenty creative with Lightroom.

For instance, I went from this photo:

to this with Lightroom:

I've done a few tutorials on what I do and am always willing to take suggestions for future tutorials on my blog, ascenicworld.com

As little as possible

I tend to use very little post processing where I have to do the work. I have found that importing my K10 PEF RAW images through DxO first cleans up a wonderful amount of minor quibbles that would otherwise take my time to fix. Then I use LR 2 and import all the DNG images that DxO produces. That's when I might tweak the white balance or exposure a little bit. It is the rare image where I actually have to do anything more. That's usually cloning out a rottenly placed power line or the like.
