noobie, but question with colorized b and w

I want to do the effect where the pic is black and white, but you choose to colorize maybe one thing, or one color theme, like just a red flower, etc. I have lightroom 2, photoshop cs 4, and elements, and can't figure it out in any. I am very new to these programs, have only used them for one week, so I apologize ahead of time if this is a very easy thing to do. Thanks-
Ben

For that effect, you could use masking (& selections eventually). For instance, you have a color image of a flower and you want to make it stand against a black & white background. On PS, convert a copy of the color layer/background to B&W; apply a white layer mask to this layer and paint in the mask with a black color brush or make a selection of the flower and apply it to the mask. You should attain the effect you are after.

I've googled a tutorial for you and found this on Youtube. Hope it helps.

If you really want to learn the in's and out's of these programs and get proficient join NAPP. Besides the tutorials on the website you get Photoshop User magazine. Definitely worth the $99 /year. And members get discounts on the books/dvd's and seminars.

Good book on the subject is CS4 for digital photographers. I have the CS3 version and it's handy to have.

Oh yes. In this particular case, you should attend Mr. Dave Cross lessons.
