GIMP 2 Crashes

I downloaded and installed GIMP 2.6.6 a few days ago. Looks to be a good alternative to Photoshop/Lightroom at an unbeatable price! Problem is, most of the time when I open up an image and start processing GIMP has a problem and shuts down.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Any ideas as to workarounds/solutions?

GIMP 2 crashes

I recall I had a similar problem. I de-installed, deleted the downloaded file, redownloaded it, reinstalled it. Works now. Of course I am still learning how it works but you can't beat the price !!!

Now I've said that, a few questions, because you say "most of the time" it shuts down:

1) does it shutdown after the image is opened but before you start doing anything to it? If you open the image and leave it alone does GIMP shutdown?

2) does it shutdown regardless of the edits you are making or only specific edits, etc?

My point is that if it's just a random shutdown at some non-predictable point you might have a fubar install caused by a hiccough during the download or install. if it's always at the same place you can report it to determine if your experience is unique.

GIMP has been crashing after I open the image but before I have made any changes. Seems that it crashes when I select levels or curves. I haven't tried to perform too many other functions to see if GIMP crashes when opening them.

I was able to make a changes to a few photos without problems.

Deleted GIMP, downloaded it again, reinstalled. I'm still getting the same problem. I can get around it sometimes but it is unclear what causes the crash.

Guess I'll report it to the developers.

What operating system are you using GIMP on - Linux, Windows, XP, Windows Vista, etc.?

I'm curious because I just bought my first Vista machine, but I have not yet installed GIMP on it. I have used GIMP successfully on a Win2K machine.

Thanks,

The PC that I'm using has Windows Vista as the operating system.

As I said, I can sometimes work around the issue but it is a pain.

Bug in GIMP Running Windows Vista

Apparently there is a bug for those running Vista:

Bug 584373 – Crashes on startup.

It seems to be a problem in both 32 and 64 bit systems.

Hopefully, it will be resolved.

Well, that sux.

Guess I'll install PSP X2 on the new Vista machine. I've been meaning to compare it against PSP X, anyway, to see if a 2.3 Ghz quad core does better than a 2.8 Ghz single core. (PSP X apparently is not "multi-processor-aware" and PSP X2 reportedly is. But other things I have read suggest that, while there is some speed increase, it's less than stellar....)

That's interesting. I'm using the latest Gimp on Win 7 RC 64 bit with no issues. Never tried Vista, but I know there are some similarities with the framework.
