Difference in output color

I am trying to teach an old dog (me) some new tricks: film:digital. I like very much the relatively environmentally friendly footprint of the digital process and the the immediacy of the technology. But I am wondering if I have bitten off more than I can chew with a digital system. For example, last night I printed a contact sheet of some jpeg images from LR that had been slightly adjusted in LR2; they were very muddy, dark. I closed LR and opened them in Picasa3 (which I use a lot for image tweeking for newspaper) and printed them as a contact sheet and they printed beautifully. In both cases I selected ICM/no color management. I was using an Epson stylus R220. I want to upgrade to a larger format Epson, but I am overwhelmed at the moment by the technology and I am frustrated with my almost flat learning curve. Lightroom is my quest at the moment as well well as better understanding the K-7 computer.

I don't know if I just needed to vent, or if this is a plea for encouragement.

I've heard a number of complaints, especially from Mac users, from K-7 users who just can't seem to get good colour off of Lightroom without fairly major tweakage. You will probably need to set up a calibration file using Adobe's DNG Profile Editor (I don't know if it works with PEF files, I don't shoot them).
As an aside, I don't really think digital is more environmentally friendly than film, but this isn't part of the discussion at hand.

Thanks.

Do you think that using jpeg format is part of the problem? I just bought a Syder3 to calibrate my Dell laptop (& printer?), but haven't even opened the box yet. Would this be the method to set up an Adobe DNG Profile, or would I find that as a download on the Adobe website?
