Photoshop CS2 history brush help!!

I'm trying to use the history brush and I keep getting this error: "Could not use the history brush because the history state does not contain a corresponding layer."

What does this error mean? It was working for me fine earlier! Here is what I'm doing:

1. Opening a new file in CS2
2. Duplicating the layer
3. Applying a filter to duplicated layer
4. Creating the mask

Now when I click on History brush I get the "circle with a line through it" icon. Am I missing a step somewhere? Can someone help me please!!!

It happens to all of us. I guess it's like when the wife uses a hammer to pry the top off a pickle jar.
