Toronto from the Olympic Island
Posted by Alvin, 08-22-2007, 03:56 PM Alvin is offline

I was out at Centre Island and Olympic Island in Toronto last night. Even with the bad weather (rain & drizzle, clouds, some wind) I think I still came out with some ok shots.

Please tell me what you think.

I really like the last one. Creative use of perspective.

The last one is pretty cool. I feel like I'm going to fall into the picture.

#3 and #4 are my favorites! #3 because of the contrast of color against the largely grey frame, and #4 for the great perspective and proof that you _can_ choose to not align the horizon when done with creative intent!

What lens was #4 taken with? Everything looks in focus! How far back were you from the bench?

Thanks for posting!

Thanks guys! Question - does the last one qualify as an abstract? Up to now I still don't really know what an abstract is This was my first time to try something quite different with my fisheye lens and I liked the result.

Here's the settings I used for each shot.

The first one was with the kit lens at 40 mm, ISO 200, AWB, f8, 0.3 seconds, handheld. JPG (oops!) Converted to B&W with Picasa (filtered for dark red).

The second and third were shot with my FA 80-200, both on tripod, not sure about the WB setting:
#2 at 170mm, ISO 200, f5.6, 2 seconds. RAW converted to JPG in Picasa.
#3 at 80mm, ISO 200, f4.7 (4.5 according to the cam), 2 seconds. RAW, WB corrected in Photoshop and touched to remove one buoy in the water.

The last one was with the DA 10-17 at 10mm, ISO 1600, Tungsten, f8.0, 0.6 seconds, handheld with SR off (I must've forgotten to turn it on after using it on the tripod that night). RAW was converted with Picasa.

I'm guessing I was about 2-3 feet from the bench. I was struggling to keep my shadow out of the frame (lower left corner) because I had a light behind me - fisheyes are very difficult that way

I think the focus point I chose was at lower left corner of my matrix because I had the most contrast there. It landed between the second and third wooden slats.

Another 2 fisheye shots from that night. Forgive me if the first one looks a bit "touristy".
