I remember when I saw this in the voting stage, and how it made me smile.
Such a cute face, you can almost see the innocence.
Love it.

It's a vapor cone. Happens when the plane breaks the sound barrier.

Got my first one in.

I'm kind of late to this party but I finally signed up and submitted some of my photos. My first submission is my first acceptation.

This also happens to be one of my favorite photos. I captured it with a DA 18-55mm AL lens that was purchased from a member of these forums.

As deadwolfbones explained, it's a vapor cone that forms when nearing/hitting the sound of speed (700-800mph). I've been to my local Blue Angels show plenty of times but this was my second attempt at trying to capture the vapor cone. They only perform the maneuver once per show and last year I failed to get the shot (with a DS.) This year I had my K20D and with a bit of luck got the shot

Got another road racing shot in there.

Just shows that you can take action shots with a Pentax

However there sure is room for improvement in Pentax's AF-C. I took this one with a clear blue sky and plenty of light, but later in the event when it got more overcast I started having problems with AF-C just not performing very well (k20d and Bigma) and the keeper rate dropped significantly. I hope that it was due to poor low light AF performance of the k20d and have since upgraded to a k7. Hopefully the faster AF motor and upgraded AF system will work out better. Otherwise I guess next step would be to try an HSM lens and if that fails... well, I don't even want to think about that

To be fair this must be just about the toughest test for an AF system, when your target comes almost straight at you at 100+ mph.

Thanks. Definitely one of the better shots of that weekend. It's one of those where you don't really realize what you have until you load in onto the laptop and look at it on a larger screen.

I just know that I am hooked on race photography now (and was already after the first race I shot).
