Some new IR 8mm cemetery images
Lens: Samyang 8mm Camera: Pentax K-7
Posted By: karma mechanic, 03-19-2012, 02:35 PM

Today I was out and about with the 8mm, which appears to be welded to the camera now.

First, a revisit of a stone angel in Southampton Old Cemetery:

I keep seeing it in different lighting, a different image every time.

Second, a different view of a different angel, presiding over a rather chaotic and gloomy looking landscape:

Third, another gravestone with ivy and shadows:

And finally, I used a cross in the military cemetery to avoid flare, but I liked the effect...

Can you tell how much I'm enjoying taking these?

Neither - it is a K-7 I modified for IR work, I fitted an 830nm internal filter.

In terms of color and contrast these are pretty much what comes out of the camera. All composed in Live View - the optical viewfinder doesn't give much idea of what the result will be...

Why did you do that? Do you like IR for your personal work? Or is it needed for your job?

I simply like the effect. I use the modified K-7 much more than the K-5, it gives me a view of the world that just works for the kind of images that appeal to me. A more graphic and less 'real' interpretation of everyday stuff. In no. 3 you'll see how dark the shadows of the ivy are, and the skies and foliage in the others.

So much so that my new website (see footer) involves just the IR side of things. I expect these will be put up tomorrow.

Outstanding - especially (for me) the first one. I think I remember that you explored these subjects before to good effect. This group - I think - is even better.

Yes, Jer is right, I've been prowling around that old cemetery for a while now. The overgrown vegetation is cleared from different areas on a rotating schedule, so each month there are new images revealed. Several that I've taken in the past now look nothing like the original scene. The place is 27 acres, and has graves from 1846 onwards. Among the thousands of memorials there are 45 for victims of the Titanic so a lot of the tidying-up has been due to the events associated with the centenary of that disaster coming up on April 14th.

The lenses have been getting wider, 8mm seems to be my walkabout lens now
