Great doggie portrait setup
Posted by codiac2600, 01-17-2008, 12:22 PM codiac2600 is offline

So I set up a perfect lighting setup for taking pictures of my pup. Basically I set two flashes at 1/4 on the floor and bounced the directly into the ceiling to get me a nice even coverage. I opened the blinds on the window and balanced for the daylight coming in which was ISO 100 f4-5.6 and 1/125.

Here are the results:

Wide angle distortion! yay!

Well Chico is tired now and will rest for his next shoot.

Nice. Thanx for sharing.

I have the unfortunate circumstance that 'flash' means 'lightning', with lightning comes thunder, to not one, but now two of my dogs, which sends them bolting.

Cute pup too! I've never seen you share shots of him before. With your never ending stream of photos, you might become the most prevalent in the "Your Pet A Day" thread then...

These are very nice, the first one is classic and does very well in BW, great dof in that one too.

Cute doggy. Looks like he (she) has some modeling experience?

Nicely done, and I do really like the lighting. And thanks for sharing the setup as well, I'll have to play around with that myself.

The first one is my favorite. I really like the "look" on the last one.

I wish my dog sat still long enough for this ... but that will never happen.

Yeah my older dog has the same flash is lighting mentality. Ha, I just remembered that thread and I'll have to post one in that thread as well.

Yeah the 16-50 actually has a nice bokeh when it's at f4.0 and you space things far enough apart.

Ha this dog is always in some funny pose, just part of his cuteness.

He wasn't staying still too much, just the light let me move around with him and just kept focusing and playing with him till he'd stay still for just a second so I can fire the shot off.

Adorable and great use of depth of field.

This style works well and you are definitely into various types of experimentation

Here's one made with single flash

This was made with a single Sunpak 383 into a Wescott silver compact umbrella high and to the right. The K10D with the Voightlander 90mm did its usual good work.

No one but Cosmo is allowed to sit in this red velvet chair....his throne so to speak

Hi Chris, very nice photos and very inovative lighting. The way that dog poses you should rent him out. :-)

Take care, Heinrich

The first and second shots are really keen! Dig the series and your lighting technique!

Thank you James and it's fun to experiment... no better way to learn imo.

Awesome, it's always good to get that light off camera.

Thank you Heinrich and it's not os much innovative as it is reading forums and discovering that one technique could be used in another fashion.

Thank you Hamid and you're a good person to turn for for inspiration to shoot some dogie pics.
