Woodpecker with an identity crisis...
Posted by photo_mom, 07-06-2008, 11:46 AM photo_mom is offline

Hi!
I've been noticing lately that we've got a very confused woodpecker in our backyard...

See, he looks to be just a normal little guy:

But, then he gets to thinking he's a hawk and goes into a dive bomb:

Then he goes all pacifist and becomes a hummingbird!!

Now, he's got this "you got a problem with that" attitude and fights
the hummingbirds!

The photos of the bird at the feeder were taken through a window, so they've got some blurring and artifacts due to the glass. This bird is even more twitchy than the hummingbirds and flies off quickly at the slightest movement. So I've never been able to catch him at the feeder while I'm outside. One of these days I've got to setup a focus trap, aka brandrx setup.

Hey Photo Mom is back!
That is one versatile little woody, alright.
Around here the magpies have chased off nearly everything else, including the squirrels.
Makes me wish for a supersoaker...

Hi dbh! Well, sort of back. My daughter has one more competition at the end of the month, then maybe I'll be free for the fall until the Christmas show gets underway.

Thanks! Yes, he definitely can't make up his mind sometimes. It's funny watching him sit on the hummingbird feeder and fight off the hummingbirds.

I'd love to see pictures of you going after the magpies with a supersoaker. That would be great!

Thanks Tracy for the shots. And WELCOME BACK! It's good to hear from some of the <cough> old timers <cough>. I see your daughter is still doing wonderfully well skating and you are doing wonderfully well being photographer/chauffeur/club secretary/club accountant/chief cheer leader/ and general factotum of the skating club.

Hi!!

Thanks for the welcome back, too! Glad you liked these.

Yes, we have had a very busy year so far. I don't know what's more depressing - the fact that it's almost the middle of July when it feels like it should just be February in my mind or the fact that my baby is going into middle school in Sept. Yikes!! (6th grade is still elementary school here. She's going into 7th. Oh Lord!!)

Nice series there, specially with commentary If you sit outside a few days in a row he might get used to you being around enough to use the feeder while you're there

Nice shots. We have a confused woodpecker in our neighborhood also. He thinks the street signs are wood and bangs away. I have never been able to catch a shot of him. Photographing birds is not easy. Good job!
