Spider macros. Warning! Not for the squeamish.

The first couple were taken with the Tamron 70-300mm. The closeups are with the Tamron and Raynox 250.

Man, you were not kidding. That spider creeps me out. I think I like the 4th one best. Those eyes are amazing.

Eeewwwwww! That's just icky. They have as many eyes as legs and that's icky. However my 14 year old budding biologist son thought they were great.

Actually nice shots. And kind of cool spider. What kind is it? But ew. I'll be girly. Ew.

An understandable reaction Mel, both from you and your son.

It's a crab spider. I'm pretty sure this is a female judging by the large abdomen. Crab spiders don't spin a web, they hide in flowers and ambush honey/pollen collectors, including bees and hornets. Pretty tough customers.

Good info there.

I'm always after spider shots. Got some on card right now, but they're not going to be this good!

I first saw this thread at work, where the images were blocked. From the comments, I was expecting to see something hideous when I checked from home - but that's actually a very nice looking spider!

Sure, but you're not a honey bee.

I thought the closeup of the spider's fangs in the bee's head would freak people out.

at first i read "Super Mario Warning!"..

this is a very nice series, you can almost get a sense that the spider is "going for the kill"

have you considered flipping the last 2 images so that the spider is right side up?

Good call Gooshin. I flipped one 90 and the other 180 degrees. In the last shot you can *really* see why they're called crab spiders.

I hadn't tried flipping these previously because my attempts on some similar photos with an upside down crab spider didn't look natural. But these definitely work better rotated IMO. Thanks.
