Few from K20D on recent cruise
Posted by Tyler, 09-07-2008, 08:47 AM Tyler is offline

This was the 4th cruise I've been on, but the only one I have been really into photography. I shot mostly with the gripped K20D and 70-200 2.8 but also with my Yashica-Mat 124G

Night before getting on the ship. Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Taken from our room in the Hotel Miliano.

Old San Juan

Downtown St Thomas, USVI

One section of the casino onboard the ship

St Thomas USVI from Deck Ten aft

St Lucia. Vendor selling her wares.

St Lucia. Many of the women vendors did not like being photographed.

St Lucia. Young girl selling flowers on the side of the road.

Me at the Sulfur Springs Volcano bathroom. St Lucia. The name aptly describes the smell.

St Kitts

St Kitts. Boy on the side of the train tracks waves to us passing by.

St Lucia. Everywhere you go, vendors try to sell you the same old stuff. You can't escape it. They even paddled out to the catamaran we were on for an excursion in St Lucio to sell us stuff.

St Kitts

St Kitts.

Looks like you had a good trip Tyler some nice shots there. I like the picture of the two guys leaning against the wall a lot. The guy waving at you is a neat image as well.

Just one point, if people don't want to be photographed, you should be respectful of that, it's only decent. Candid shots with a zoom are ok but not when you are straight on and in their face. Besides, photographers get a hard enough time as it is about shooting in the streets. If you really want to take a picture of someone, speak to them first, befriend them, offer to let them see it on the cameras lcd, if they are selling fruit or something, buy something. If you do get a picture, it will be a much better shot than people with their hands over their faces. Like the picture I mentioned above, he was a willing model so the picture is good. The photo of the guys worked because it was a candid shot and you weren't intruding on them, you got a private moment instead of something contrived.
Just my 2 pennies worth but I hope you see my point(s).

I love the Caribbean - thanks for the tour! We were on St. Lucia a couple years back and these pictures brought back some pleasant memories. The street vendors didn't seem to bother us at all but I guess they turn on the charm when a cruise ship arrives.

The last shots looks like the Pitons from St. Lucia, am I right?

Thanks for sharing

I like the last one as the mountain looks average till you see the building in the foreground and that gives you a different view of things

cheers
