Tamron 70-300 as the only macro option...
Created by Igilligan, 10-24-2008, 09:05 PM Igilligan is offline

This guy was so jittery that I could not get close to him without him flying away until I moved back... So my vivitar 105 was out of the question. So I grabbed the seldom used tamron 70-300, clicked it into macro mode and gave it a shot...

some PF as to be expected with this lens... but it does pretty well for 300mm...

i have no weight in opinion, but i really like those pics. the 3rd and 1st are my favs. sorry for the probably silly question, but what does PF mean? I understand most photography terms and acronyms, but i cant thiunk what it stands for.

by the way is that just a 1:2 macro tmaron, or something more 'high end' i have a sigma 70-300 which does 1:2 in macro mode, and i havent been able to get a shot this in focus, whilst so 'zoomed in'.

It is the just the regular 1:2 70-300 LD DI ... A fun lens for sure. The PF is purple fringing... you can see it real heavy on the legs of the dragonfly on the pole in shot number 3.

It is something that happens with this lens in high contrast situations, ie the dark legs on that blown pole... It happens alot with branches and other contrasty conditions.
Do a search for Purple fringing or CA. I am not well versed on explaining it.

Very nice Gus. I also have this lens. It is a very good lens for the price, except for the PF. I did play with the Pentax 55-300 today and it is so much lighter than the Tammy.

thanks. i already have a good knowledge of CA (and now PF ) I remember reading a few reviews where the sigma and tamron were compared. they are basically the same lense, if i recall, but the tamron did have more CA.

still, great pics.
