Can anyone identify this snake?
Posted By: dws1117, 11-04-2008, 09:44 AM

I found this little dude lying by my front door. He was about 6 inches long so he is either a baby or very young. He doesn't appear to be venomous. He doesn't have the diamond head shape common with the pit vipers around here. Anyone know what he is?

Maybe one of these?

Texas Brown Snake

Steve

(The picture of the smaller one on the guy's palm looks like he could be your friend's brother...)

Thanks. Looks like the one.

Both pictures are of the same snake. The hand is mine. The middle pic was taken on the hood of my truck.

General rule:

Dog Eyes (Round pupils) = non-venomous
Cat Eyes (Elliptical pupils) = venomous

Absent a telltale rattle, the eyes are the single best and most consistent way to tell if a snake is poisonous.

This guy sure looks like he has round pupils.

I'd say Texas Brown Snake as well...

If it is a Brown Snake as suspected they max out at about 12 inches. He is almost that now (by the looks of things)... He is a cute little bugger though!

I have a 4' ball python that is as big around as my wrist and she has another 2-3' of growing to do.

That's good to know.
Now help me review the general rule of colors of celestial bodies.

Planets reflect light and often twinkle red or blue while stars often twinkle white or orange.
What is the best way to quickly distinguish a star from a planet if you have no knowledge of constellations or where the planets rise and set?
Sorry for the crazy train sidetrack.
